Food on the beach, often free.
The free food which I mentioned in the previous chapter regarding villas is not just a feature
of Oro Verde. In fact, the whole area over there (around Boca de Uchire town) is known for
the generous spirit with which the locals readily offer dinner to anyone who comes their way.
The main beaches stretch out on an isthmus which on one side has a lake filled to the brim
with large shrimp, and to the other side the ocean, rich in fish and other seafood. So around
dusk, expect to see fires and grilling on the beach when the catch gets cooked. King shrimp
is abundant. But refrigerators, freezers, cool ice is in short supply. So everyone feels that the
best thing to do is just to eat. Not store. Tomorrow, they go out and catch some more. That
is how easy life is. Actually, it would probably cost more to put the shrimp on ice in the
freezer (if a freezer can be found) than the alternative. The generous locals love to share with
strangers.
