Sample prices.
All prices in Venezuela tend to change. Sometimes up, sometimes down, depending on the exchange rate of the US-dollar relative to the local currency, known as the Bolivar (shortened "Bs.")

If the dollar is strong, prices go down for foreigners. But if inflation runs too fast - and the exhange rate does not catch up quick enough - then prices go up for foreigners. So be advised that all the prices mentioned in this guide will probably fluctuate. However, regardless of what happens, you will find that Venezuela is still much cheaper than any of the other Caribbean destinations. It is simply the best value for money and has been for as long as I can remember.

Sample prices, correct as of early 2005, are:

  • Gasoline: Cheapest in the world, at 11 cents a gallon

  • Local rum: Large bottle, from about $2. Small bottle, from approx $1.10

  • Dinner in a restaurant: From $1 to $15, depending on the type of place

  • Bus fare: 20 cents for any ride within Caracas (up to 2 hours duration, max.)

  • Postage: 50 cents, approximately, for a post card or airmail letter to the United States
